Jewelry that’s too long snags and rubs; too short and it presses into healing tissue. The fix is two sizes over a piercing’s life: a longer initial bar that allows for swelling, then a shorter downsize once things settle. How do I measure my tissue depth?
Ask your piercer: they measure tissue depth accurately, and a home caliper reading of the piercing itself is a rough guide at best. Enter that figure and the calculator adds the clearance. If a post already fits a healed piercing well, you do not need this calculator: its usable length between the ends is your size, clearance included, so order that length rather than entering it here (it would add the clearance a second time).
Why is fresh jewelry longer than what I'll wear later?
A new piercing swells, so the initial bar is fitted a few millimetres longer to leave room. Once the swelling settles — usually within the first few weeks — a shorter bar is fitted so the ends don't press on skin, teeth, or gums. That second, shorter size is your downsize. This tool adds a bigger allowance when you tick 'fresh piercing' and a small one when you don't.
Why did it round my size up?
Jewelry is sold in fixed stock lengths (6, 8, 10, 12 mm and so on), so the calculator rounds the ideal length UP to the next available size, never down. A bar shorter than the calculated length eats into the room the ends need, and near the long sizes it can come out shorter than the tissue itself. If the length is past the longest stock bar, the calculator says so instead of suggesting a shorter one; ask your piercer or the seller about a custom length.
